What are the operational philosophies of Teen Boot Camps?
Teen boot camps operate as short-term programs usually lasting only a few weeks of intense activity. Boot camps put a lot of emphasis on physical activity and calisthenics. Boot Camps are notorious for their drill sergeants yelling while standing in the students face. Most juvenile boot camps have very limited academic programs if they have any academic programs at all. Boot Camps operate by having the students do a lot of hiking, push-ups, drills, roll calls, etc. The boot camp staff usually consists of ex-military boot camp drill sergeants and ex-military personnel. What are typical results of a teen boot camp? While there are obvious differences based upon factors such as student personality and the particular boot camp. Most boot camp enrollees find themselves in a very short time very near where they left off as far as life choices, drug use, peer group and attitude. It cannot be emphasized enough that due to years of a troubled youth building non -working choices, habits and attitudes that it is near psychologically impossible to do an about face in a short period of time and maintain positive results long-term. This belief could be more wishful thinking, and sales propaganda. In the U.S. military the drill sergeants are able to motivate the boot camp cadets and further enhance their self-discipline, however that approach is working with typically already motivated, mature adults as opposed to defiant teenagers. Furthermore juvenile boot camps have one of the worst recidivism rates of all the various options for troubled teenagers. Meaning again, that they are typically unable to help their enrollees maintain change after returning home. |
